Wanting to branch out, the Pontiac Buggy Co. launched the Oakland Motor Company in 1907. After two years, it was acquired by General Motors, who introduced the first Pontiac car in the market in 1926. This was one of the few enclosed hardtops in a market full of fabric tops. It fell between the cheaper Chevrolets and more luxurious Cadillacs. Pontic was aimed for the middle class and build a strong reputation in upscale yet affordable sedans. Performance-oriented cars is what Pontiac aims at today while rebuilding its image. Pontiac is becoming a staple prize on reality shows like Big Brother, Survivor and the Apprentice. Oprah was probably their biggest advertising coup when she gave a way the tehn-new G6 midsize sedan to her entire audience in 2004. In the 1950s, Pontiac began to move away from its reputation for building bland but reliable sedans by pursuing more race-inspired designs. That’s how they entered the racing circuit at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1956. This gave name to the now legendary full-size boat our grandparents all drove. A perfect example of the 1950’s fascination with things huge was the Bonnie. It also set the stage for big-bodied cars. It’s reportedly that the Pontiac platform was the widest available on the market. 1960’s was the decade Pontiac hit its peak with its powerful V8 engine. Putting this engine in the midsize- Tempest and calling it a GTO launched the muscle car era. This was an affordable racer car and is a legend as much for its power as for its easy modifiability. The Pontiac GTO gave way to the birth of several performance models like the Trans Am, Grand Prix, and the Firebird. After a 30-year pause, Pontiac has recently re-introduced it in 2004 but only in coupe form. As many automakers, after the gas crunch on the 1970’s, Pontiac focused on smaller cars like the Sunbird, Fiero and the redesigned LeMans. They did try not to sacrifice sporty performance features. In the 1990’s, a huge turnaround came when Pontiac introduced the Sunfire, living up to their slogan “We build Excitement”. This was an affordable convertible. Pontiac entered the minivan market with the TranSport and later the Montana which is already out of production The ill-fated Aztek was their choice for the crossover market. This car was never given a fighting chance due to its unusual style. The Matrix was a similar crossover in partnership with Toyota. Smaller than the Aztek and with a more appealing style, it's aimed at a young audience and continues to be very successful Emphasizing its heritage of combining high-end comfort with top-end driving performance is how Pontiac wants to distinguished itself from other GM Lines. This is why a new G line is underway. The G5 replaces the old sunbird compact in the sedan market. The Oprah-supported G6 is the midsize version. Ranking # 11 as a best-selling car in 2005 a convertible version is due in 2007. The luxury sedan line is headed by the Grand Prix that has been around since 1962, in one shape or the other. It now serves as the largest sedan in the Pontiac lineup. The new G8 currently in the works is set to replace the Grand Prix 2008/2009. Solstice is Pontiac’s newest car. It is Sporty and convertible whose style and horsepower have reinvigorated the Company’s image. In the SUV arena, the Torrent is new for 2006. Also, a new turbo model delivering 260 hp is set to be released soon.
