In an attempt to draw to a younger generation of hipper Gen Y crowd, Toyota created Scion when they learned that their average buyer was 48 years old as they wished to build brand loyalty over the years. Youth is a powerful market, catered to the film industry, TV producers, fashion world and of course carmakers. Scion's mission is to produce affordable compact entry-level cars that appeal to younger drivers with attention-grabbers such as top fuel economy, copious customizable accessories and a hassle-free non-negotiable Pure Price sticker concept. The XA and the XB both debuted at the LA Auto Show in 2003. These were the first Scions to do so. Both had a limited release and were rebadged Japanese cars. The brand went nationwide until they were joined by the first true Scion model, the TC 2-door hatch in 2004. The XB is the most popular of the Scions, and they represent 40% of the sales. It is very recognizable with its boxy milk-truck look. Even though unique at the time, this layout was perfect for hauling cargo of college friends. The XA had more traditional rounded lines. In any case, they both started out with a 1.5 liter, 108horsepower14 engine. Having an array of aftermarket options is what makes the Scion notable and appealing to younger buyers. Listing 40 accessories both inside and out, buyers can customize their car to their lifestyle. As part of the marketing campaign, Toyota offers limited Release Series in small numbers. Honda fit and Chevy Caliber are some inherited competitors of the subcompact Scions since its debut. 2008 will see its first refresh of the line. The XA was replaced by the XD which carries a longer wheelbase and gets a more powerful 1.8 liter, 128horsepower 14engine in 2008. The tC remains the same, but the xB undergoes some restyling. Still very square and boxy, more cargo space has been added, edges softened, split-folding rear seats included. it now shares the 2.4-liter engine with the tC, though it only hits 158-hp. To keep luring the Gen Y buyers, both the XD and XB will come with standard ipod ports.
