Subaru’s logo of six-star cluster is derived from the Pleiades constellation, a cluster of seven stars (seven sisters), only six of which are visible to the naked eye. But it also refers to the formation of Fuji Heavy Industries out of the merger of five Japanese companies in 1953. The meaning of the word Subaru is “unity”. By 1988, all-wheel drive was a standard feature. Another innovation was the electronically continuous transmission in the Subaru Justy. The unique horizontal box or flat engine was also an innovation. Today, Subarus are known for their turbo engines and high performance. Although their line up is not extensive, it has been durable. Its all terrain vehicle, The BRAT, had an open bed designed for a your and outdoorsy crowd. . It boasted the highest gas mileage at the time. Today you may know it as the Baja, since it has been rebranded taking a modern cut on the dune buggy. Introduced in 1990, the Legacy Wagon, is still the best-selling wagon in the U.S. Becoming its own standalone, the Outback version model in 1996 was marketed as a more rugged version of the Legacy. Followed right after by the small Forester SUV, this vehicle was popular for its car-feel but storage versatility. Moving away from its conservative and staid image, Subaru has created two rally cars in the early 1990’s: The Impreza WRX and SVX Coupe. The non-turbo Impreza sedan debuted in 1993 as a solid, economical compact. Subaru’s first large Sports Utility Vehicle was the B9 Tribeca which debuted in 2006. It has optional seating for seven passengers which is a first for any Subaru vehicle.
